This is a note by Dr. Anita Sharma, Lactation Consultant, Fortis La Femme, Delhi, who speaks about the Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breast milk is the best for a new born baby, especially in the first 6 months.
So why should we resort to artificial milk substitutes or milk from other animals? After all milk produced is species specific. Hence human babies deserve human milk. It is easily digestible and changes from colostrum to mature milk helping your baby to adapt from the womb to the world. The consistency of human milk also varies from more watery in the beginning to more fat in the hind milk during each feeding session. Can any formula do so?
Breast milk is your child's first immunization. It protects your baby from infections of the gut, urinary tract, respiratory tract. Breastfed babies are at a lower risk of diabetes, early childhood cancer, obesity, and many allergies like asthmas. Children who are breastfed have a slightly higher IQ, developmental scores, better speech and less dental issues.
Mothers who breastfeed are at a lesser risk of ovarian, breast and endometrial cancers. Breastfeeding also prevents osteoporosis and iron deficiency anemia. They are able to loose pregnancy weight faster. lt delays the onset of mensuration, enables family planning and spacing pregnancy. Prolactin hormone produced during feeding helps a mother to relax with its a calming effect. Not only does it make life and travel easier but also reduces her workload.
The socioeconomic benefits of breastfeeding cannot be undermined. Breastfeeding saves money spent on healthcare and production and procurement of milk substitutes. It contributes to child survival impacting the demo-graph of our society. Conservation of energy and fuel make it environmentally friendly.
